A Letter to my Daughter

To my dear daughter,

We get to meet face-to-face any day now, so there is no better time to organize some of the thoughts and excitement I have in preparing to birth you.

My dear one, you have been prayed for for so very long. Even before your Papi and I got married, your Papi told me how much he longed to have a little girl one day. We were certain our first pregnancy was a little girl, but we never got to meet her this side of heaven. We continued to pray for you, the little girl we would meet here on earth. But, first came your brother, Nathanael. Let me just tell you, he is already the very best big brother for you! He is a fighter (really good at kicking since before he was even born), a protector, a teaser (so be a little warned) all in love, a giver, a helper, just to name a few of the good qualities that he will be for you. He loves showing others my belly as he knows that someone special is in there. I’m sure he will have a bit of an adjustment as well once you get here, but I am certain in short time you will be the best of friends. I can’t wait for him to love on you, to teach you, to share with you all that he so much enjoys of the outdoors, farm life and vehicles.

Oh, let me tell you a little more about your Papi. He loves you so much already! He is the strongest man you will meet and you will feel most protected in his arms, this I know. Papi works very hard for our family and he sacrifices a lot for the best for us. He will teach you much about your Dominican roots (and where we can’t wait to take you to meet your family there), baseball and cooking some delicious Dominican food. He will help prepare you for being a wife and mother in God’s time, and he will always represent the greatest relationship you can have, with your heavenly Father.

Mommy and Papi can’t wait to share your name!! We have only shared it with your brother and thankfully, he doesn’t yet tell anyone. Your name has been prayed over for a long time too. We had settled on a meaning that almost became your given name, but we prayed and waited on the Lord for a name that would be best for the woman you become. This woman is a model for all of us, and I know you will carry this name so well. As with how the Lord gave us your brother’s name, He has confirmed so much in your name to us as we wait to meet to you.

Above all else, your Papi and I pray you will bear the name of Jesus. We pray you come to know Jesus at a young age, that you will never know a day without Him. We know that you are entrusted to our care for just a short time, but you will always be His. And, we can’t wait to be part of what He has in store for your precious life. Know that His plans are always best, even when it doesn’t seem like it. Know that He loves you more than you can comprehend, even when you may not feel it. Know that He fights for you, intercedes for you, and gave His life for you. There is no one you can trust more. Know your Mommy and Papi will fail you, people here on this earth with fail you. Despite our best intentions to love, raise and teach you well, Mommy and Papi will do things wrong. BUT, Jesus will NEVER fail you, so whatever is before you (good or bad or just confusing), take it to Him.

May I tell you that I am a little nervous in having a little girl? I’ve heard that with girls comes “accessorizing” and your momma is not quite into the accessories. Your Papi has to remind me to go buy a new dress or a new pair of shoes. Boys just seem simpler. However, your momma does love learning new things and is up for new adventures, so that’s what we’ll be on together. I will learn from you and you will learn from me; we will both grow in wonderful ways.

There is so much that I am learning in motherhood. Now to raise a daughter, God has even greater plans for me to learn. I pray that I teach you, discipline you, love you to reflect all the godly, pure, beautiful aspects of femininity, of being a girl and becoming a woman. To grow and bloom where you are planted, to bear fruit in every season, to seek wise counsel and trust in the Lord with all your heart, soul and mind. I pray for His strength in modeling respecting your husband, loving your children and caring for others, that you will learn to fight on your knees for your future husband, family, home and for others in need and entrusted to your care. I pray that despite all my errors, you will know that I love you beyond what words or actions express and that I will always desire His greatest blessings over you.

I know you will be strong, capable, firm in your ways (and you might just be as active as your big brother). Ready to meet you whenever it’s time.
